Place Lab https://cc.sandboxstaging.net/all-project-list/place-lab/ Wed, 11 Mar 2015 18:07:55 +0000 http://cc.sandboxstaging.net/?post_type=project&p=1878 Place Lab is a catalyst for mindful urban transformation and creative redevelopment for equitable and livable cities. As a creative think tank, Place Lab designs and tests a model of community development driven by arts and culture to be made available to cities and neighborhoods across the country. Our work is rooted in the idea that reinventing abandoned spaces through placemaking opens opportunities in urban communities—both by activating residents and community members to contribute to neighborhood change and by attracting outside investment.

Envisioned by the Arts and Public Life Initiative and its director, Theaster Gates, at the University of Chicago and funded by the Knight Foundation, Place Lab draws on metrics from Gates’s projects and works to export and adapt the lessons learned from these projects into community-led development in Akron, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; and Gary, Indiana—our demonstration cities. Place Lab believes that communities contain the seeds for their success and facilitates place-based revitalization and reinvestment guided by neighborhood residents and stakeholders.

Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry https://cc.sandboxstaging.net/all-project-list/gray-center-for-arts-and-inquiry/ Wed, 11 Mar 2015 18:02:32 +0000 http://cc.sandboxstaging.net/?post_type=project&p=1870 The Richard and Mary L. Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry is a new forum at the University of Chicago for experimental collaborations between artists and scholars. In fall 2013, the Gray Center moved into its permanent home, the Gray Center Lab in Midway Studios, which features a flexible 1000 square foot work space that can be configured as a studio, lab, or classroom, as well as an installation, exhibition and performance space. The Center also offers office space to project collaborators.

Just as important as our new home is our diasporic aspiration: Gray Center activities take place all over campus (encompassing various divisions, departments, and programs), across the community and throughout the city. Through its various programs – including the Mellon Residential Fellowships for Arts Practice and Scholarship, incubator initiatives, lab events, collaborative experiments, salons, international conferences, and institutional collaborations — the Gray Center seeks to foster a culture of innovation and experimentation at the intersection of arts practice and scholarship.

We aim to stimulate and provoke both graduate and undergraduate students, encouraging the development of independent and challenging thought as expressed and inscribed in the visual arts. We propose that art is inquiry. Our faculty, diverse in its pursuits, is critically engaged in dialogue nationally and internationally. Our students benefit from this dialogue, and are also encouraged to pursue areas of overlap with the many other disciplines represented at the university – – history, art history, science, philosophy, aesthetics, theater, music, and creative writing to name a few.
