WHPK Jazz Format presents “Billy Eckstine Sings & Dizzy Gillespie Swings” as part of the 59th Street Jazz Series and the WHPK Reel Jazz Documentary Film Series. Eckstine and Gillespie were major figures in the evolution of modern jazz and their career paths crossed at significant junctures. Both played trumpet, performed with the Earl Hines Orchestra, led all-star bands and wrote songs that became jazz standards. Eckstine’s sultry voice catapulted him to crossover star and Gillespie developed the harmonic and rhythmic framework that would shape jazz for decades to come. Film length: approximately 50 minutes.
Free and open to the public.
