OPERA: Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard

Event on: March 15th, 2015, 2:00 PM– 5:00 PM

Location: Mandel Hall: 1131 East 57th Street, Chicago, IL 60637

OPERA: Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard

Heads will roll! Falsly accused of sorcery by an envious relative, Colonel Fairfax is condemned to death and awaits execution in the Tower of London. Fellow war hero Sergeant Meryll and his daughter, Phoebe, hatch a plot to free Colonel Fairfax from the Tower of London; at the same time, however, wandering street performers Jack Point and Elsie Maynard find themselves in a position to benefit greatly by Fairfax’s execution. Revered as the most tragic and complex work of the Gilbert & Sullivan canon, The Yeomen of the Guard features topsy-turvy plot twists, a trio of reluctant marriages, and a haunting score that is regarded by many as Sullivan’s finest work.

Anyone familiar with Gilbert and Sullivan dreams of working on Yeomen,” says newcomer Shane Valenzi, making his Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company debut. “It’s the richest, most complex, and most difficult operetta of the entire canon. With great risk comes great reward, however: with laughter and tears in equal measure, experiencing a truly great performance of Yeomen—which this production promises to be—stirs the sort of transcendent emotions that audiences remember long after the actors take their final bows.

Tickets: $50 Patron / $20 General / $5 Student / $10 Groups of 10 or more Buy Tickets.

This performance will run approximately 3 hours with one 15 minute intermission.
